Challenge 3 – People in Places

Buildings are wonderfully cooperative subjects. They tend to stay where they are while you draw them. People are rather less considerate.
Challenge 3 will take me outside my architectural comfort zone and make people a more important part of the sketch. The intention is not to learn portraiture or detailed figure drawing, but to become more confident putting believable people into the places I draw.
The challenge will begin simply, looking at gesture, proportion and how little information is actually needed to suggest a person. From there, figures will gradually find their way into cafés, streets, markets, stations and other urban scenes. Sometimes the people may be the subject; at other times they will simply provide scale, movement and life to the place around them.
The real objective is that by the end of the thirty days I stop regarding people as awkward objects that have unfortunately wandered into an otherwise perfectly good architectural sketch.
This challenge should hopefully begin in October 2026.
