Challenge 2 – Classical Architecture

The first challenge concentrates on urban architecture and on learning to look at buildings without feeling the need to draw every brick, window and piece of stonework. For Challenge 2 I want to take some of those lessons into the world of classical architecture.
Temples, columns, arches, capitals, pediments, ruins and monumental buildings will provide the subjects, but this will not be an architectural drawing course. The aim is still loose urban sketching: understanding enough of the structure and perspective to make the building convincing, then deciding what can safely be left out.
Some days will involve complete buildings, while others will concentrate on just part of a structure — perhaps a row of columns, a capital, an archway or a section of an ancient ruin. I particularly want to explore whether studying these smaller elements can help me understand the whole building without becoming obsessed with detail.
The challenge should hopefully begin in September 2026.
