Day 50 – The Classical Cornice

Today’s challenge was to look at the classical cornice — not simply as decoration, but as a structural element projecting from the building. I wanted to concentrate on four things: structure, profile, shadow and detail. I began with a preliminary drawing using the Sailor Fude. I still haven’t quite learned to love the appearance of the Fude, but today I found a very good reason for having it in the toolbox. It behaved almost like charcoal: broad, immediate marks that allowed me to establish the big shapes, projections and shadows without worrying about making a finished drawing.

I then moved to my more familiar pen, The Pilot Falcon, for the final sketch. The interesting thing was that the preliminary had already done the thinking for me. The final drawing became much more about explaining the structure — the projecting cornice, the layers of moulding, the deep shadows beneath it and the relationship between the entablature and the columns.

Day 50 Scored 8/10 – which is apparently ‘hangable’, not sure this one will be though.
