This challenge is about looking at architecture at two different scales: the building as a whole, and the smaller details that give it character.
Each study pairs a Monumental Architecture sketch with a piece of Lesser Detail from the same building. The larger study concentrates on mass, silhouette, proportions, rhythm, openings and light and shadow. The smaller study might be a gargoyle, statue, capital, doorway, window, carving, column or architectural fragment.
The aim is not to reproduce every detail. Instead, I want to explore how much information is needed at each scale to make the subject convincing, and how studying a small element can deepen my understanding of the larger structure.
The challenge began on 4 October 2026 with Day 61 and will run for 30 days, through Day 90. As the challenge progresses, I’ll add each day’s study below.
