Day 78 — Hōryū-ji, Nara, Japan

The five-storey pagoda at Hōryū-ji offered a different architectural challenge, with its sweeping eaves, layered roofs and intricate timber construction. I used a Sailor 1911L Ringless fountain pen with sepia and grey washes for the main study.

For the lesser detail, I concentrated on the projecting eaves and rows of wooden brackets, using Pelikan Moonstone, ochre ink and the Sailor Ringless. Reflected light beneath the eaves made the shadows less predictable than I expected, adding another challenge to an already intricate subject.
